Learning a Foreign Language: When Should Children Begin?

Casal dels Infants – Learning a foreign language is a valuable skill in an increasingly interconnected world, offering numerous personal and professional benefits. However, a common question that arises is when is the right time to start? Experts suggest that the earlier a child starts learning a foreign language, the greater the benefits they can gain, both in terms of cognitive and social development.

Early Childhood: The Golden Age of Language Learning

Many studies show that early childhood, particularly before the age of 7, is a great period to start learning a foreign language. At this age, a child’s brain is highly plastic and adaptable, allowing them to absorb languages in a very natural way. Children at this age are able to mimic pronunciations very well, even without needing a complex understanding of grammar.

This process is similar to how they learn their mother tongue. Children can learn more than one language at a time without confusion, as their brains can handle the phonetic differences between languages. This is why many parents introduce foreign languages, such as English, Mandarin, or Japanese, to their children from a very young age or even during infancy.

Between Ages 7 to 12: A Productive Time for Learning

Although early childhood is the ideal time to introduce a foreign language, children aged 7 to 12 also have remarkable abilities to learn new languages. At this age, children have more structured thinking skills and can begin to understand grammar and syntax concepts in a foreign language.

Additionally, children at this stage are more easily involved in more systematic learning activities, such as language courses or foreign language programs at school. Learning a language at this age also enhances a child’s abilities in other areas, including mathematics and science, as many studies show that mastering more than one language can improve overall cognitive intelligence.

Benefits of Learning a Foreign Language Early

There are numerous benefits for children who begin learning a foreign language at an early age. One of the primary advantages is the improvement in communication skills, as children become more open to various ways of interacting with people from different cultures. Additionally, foreign language skills provide long-term benefits in academic and career development.

Furthermore, learning a foreign language can help children develop critical and creative thinking abilities. They learn to view the world from different perspectives, which can enrich their life experiences.
