Gavel Strikes! Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Sentenced to 27 Years for Orchestrating Coup
Casal dels Infants – Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and 3 months in federal maximum-security prison. Brazil’s Supreme Court found him guilty of orchestrating a coup attempt after his defeat in the 2022 election.
The ruling places the 70-year-old former leader in the grim prospect of spending the rest of his life behind bars. Just a few years ago, such an outcome was almost unthinkable for the Brazilian public.
Four out of five judges found Jair Bolsonaro guilty on five serious counts, including plotting a coup, forming an armed criminal organization, threatening democratic order through violence, and inciting the January 8, 2023, assault on government buildings.

“The defendants committed every criminal act charged by the Attorney General’s Office,” declared Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the first to cast a guilty vote in the historic trial.
Prosecutors argued that plans for the coup had been in motion since 2021. Investigative documents revealed the involvement of explosives, military-grade weapons, and even poison. The perpetrators allegedly aimed these at targeting President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and other top officials.
Federal police added that Bolsonaro had full knowledge of the plan and even pressured the military to intervene. Electronic communications presented in court further reinforced these claims.
The verdict sparked fierce reactions from Bolsonaro’s camp. His eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, denounced the trial as politically motivated and unfair.
“Under the pretense of defending democracy, the very pillars of democracy are being dismantled to condemn an innocent man,” he told reporters defiantly.
Bolsonaro himself insisted the trial was nothing more than a “political witch hunt.” Several of his allies, both inside Brazil and abroad, echoed this sentiment.
U.S. President Donald Trump called the ruling against Bolsonaro shocking. “I thought he was a good president for Brazil, and it’s very surprising that this could happen,” Trump said from the White House.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also described the verdict as “unfair” and hinted at possible responses from Washington.
However, Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the nation would not be “intimidated by foreign actors,” affirming that the judicial process was carried out independently and in line with the constitution.
Bolsonaro’s legal team still has the option to appeal, though many analysts believe his chances are slim. The verdict adds to the long list of former Latin American leaders entangled in legal scandals, from Álvaro Uribe in Colombia to Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in Argentina.
Observers warn that the case could significantly reshape Brazil’s political landscape ahead of the next election. Bolsonaro’s hardline supporters, in particular, feel betrayed by the country’s judicial system.
