UNICEF: 2024, Worst Year for Children
Casal dels Infants – The year 2024 is considered one of the darkest periods in history for children, according to the latest report from UNICEF. Armed conflicts, mass displacement, and escalating violence have left more than one in six children worldwide living in dangerous and unstable conditions.
UNICEF estimates that approximately 473 million children are living in conflict-affected areas in 2024. This marks a dramatic increase from the 1990s when only around 10 percent of children lived in such conditions. Today, nearly 19 percent of the global child population is growing up in war zones.
Armed attacks in Gaza reportedly killed more than 17,492 children during nearly 15 months of relentless conflict. The fighting has reduced much of the territory to rubble. Ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan, Myanmar, Haiti, and the Palestinian territories have also severely worsened the conditions for children.

The latest UN report states that armed groups and parties to conflict committed 32,990 grave violations against 22,557 children in 2023. This marks the highest number since monitoring began under the mandate of the UN Security Council. These violations include killings, sexual violence, forced recruitment, and attacks on schools and healthcare facilities.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said that children growing up in conflict zones are far more likely to drop out of school, suffer from malnutrition, face forced displacement, and endure deep psychological trauma.
UNICEF recorded that conflict and violence displaced over 47 million children by the end of 2023. Escalating hostilities in multiple regions are expected to push that number even higher in 2024.
Sexual violence and disrupted education have become everyday threats for millions of children caught in war. Growing malnutrition rates and the psychological toll of armed conflict add to their alarming reality.
“The world is failing these children,” said Russell. “As we look ahead to 2025, we must do more to reverse these devastating trends and act urgently to protect and restore the lives and futures of children everywhere.”
