Alleged Matricide in Bengkulu: Mental Health Factors Under Scrutiny
Casal dels Infants – The alleged matricide committed by NR against his biological mother has shocked the local community. The incident took place on Jalan Manggis 1, Panorama Subdistrict, Singaran Pati District, Bengkulu City, on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at around 1:00 PM local time. Authorities believe the suspect, an 18-year-old teenager, took the life of his mother, YT (49), inside their family home.
The alleged matricide stunned residents, especially since there had been no apparent signs of conflict between the two. Following the incident, NR reportedly ran to a neighbor’s house and entrusted his younger sibling to their care before being taken into police custody for further investigation.
In the initial police interrogation, NR claimed he killed his mother while being “possessed.” He stated he had no awareness of committing the murder, nor could he recall the exact sequence of events. The suspect reportedly used a stone pestle and a kitchen knife to carry out the assault; police found both weapons at the scene, stained with blood.
“The suspect claimed to have been possessed and unaware that he had killed his mother,” said Kompol Sujud Yulam Lam, Head of Criminal Investigation at the Bengkulu Police, Tuesday (August 5, 2025).
Statements from local residents revealed that NR has a history of mental illness and had previously undergone psychiatric treatment. Several neighbors noted that while NR sometimes displayed unusual behavior, it had never been violent before. This background has now become a key focus of the ongoing investigation.
“The suspect had been previously treated at a mental hospital,” confirmed Iptu Putra Agung, Head of Criminal Investigation at Gading Cempaka Police, Sunday (August 3, 2025). This information strengthens the suspicion that psychological factors played a role in the incident.
To determine NR’s mental condition, the police have enlisted a psychiatric specialist. The psychiatric specialist conducts the examination to assess the suspect’s mental state. They aim to determine whether he was classified as a person with a mental disorder (ODGJ) at the time of the crime. This medical assessment will be crucial in guiding the next legal steps.
“We’ve requested help from a psychiatric specialist to evaluate the suspect’s condition. We’re waiting for the results,” said Kompol Sujud Yulam Lam.
As of now, the suspect remains in police custody. The case is still under active investigation. Authorities will use the outcome of the psychiatric evaluation to determine the next legal steps. They will decide whether to proceed with prosecution or refer the suspect to a mental health facility for treatment.
