How Advanced Was the Weapon Used to Shoot Charlie Kirk?
Casal dels Infants – Investigators firmly believe a bolt-action rifle shot conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Thursday (Sept. 10). U.S. investigators later revealed that they had found the weapon during their search near the crime scene.
An assailant fatally shot Charlie Kirk, known as a writer, podcast host, and close ally of President Donald Trump who helped bolster Republican support among younger voters, while he was delivering a speech at a university in Utah. The incident shocked the public, given Kirk’s prominence in conservative circles.
Officials described the recovered weapon as a high-powered bolt-action rifle. Investigators found the firearm in a wooded area near the shooting site.

Shooters commonly use bolt-action rifles for long-range shooting, and they value them for their precision even though the rifles fire more slowly than semi-automatic weapons. The FBI is currently analyzing the rifle in its laboratory to uncover more clues about the shooter and the motive behind the attack.
Three law-enforcement officers who spoke on condition of anonymity told the New York Times that the seized rifle is an older Mauser model. Other U.S. media also reported that the weapon was an imported Mauser bolt-action chambered in .30-06.
The .30-06 cartridge was first developed in 1906 for very long-range fire, with an effective reach of nearly 914 meters. The original M1906 round used a 150-grain, flat-base projectile. After World War I, the U.S. military sought a more powerful, accurate round for long-range firearms and later adopted the 173-grain boattail M1 ball cartridge to improve long-range performance.
Investigators also recovered several cartridge casings at the scene, including a spent round found in the rifle’s chamber. Experienced marksmen and hunters typically use weapons of this type.
Reuters reported that authorities are also examining mysterious engravings found on some of the ammunition. Officials actively analyze those markings to uncover their meaning and link them to the suspect’s identity.
Brad Garrett, a retired FBI agent, said the evidence released so far shows the shooter planned the attack in meticulous detail. He explained that the suspect disposed of the firearm along the escape route to avoid being seen carrying it.
“He may have done that so he wouldn’t be seen carrying a weapon while running or walking through the area,” Garrett told ABC News.
Authorities released video footage during a press briefing that showed the suspect climbing onto a rooftop and crossing a road. The suspect then moved into a wooded area near the campus. Investigators say they ultimately found the rifle believed to have been used in the shooting in that wooded area.
Those details show the attacker carefully planned the assault on Charlie Kirk. They also show that the shooter carried it out with knowledge of long-range firearms.
