The Benefits of Board Games for Child Development
Casal dels Infants – Traditional games such as board games and flashcards are increasingly recognized for their positive impact on children’s development. Compared to digital games, these activities are considered more effective in improving focus, preventing speech delays, and even reducing symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
These benefits were highlighted by Dr. Mesty Ariotedjo, a pediatrician and co-founder of the educational platform Tentang Anak, during the launch of the board game Jelajahi Laut Dalam (Explore the Deep Sea) on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in Bintaro, South Tangerang.
A team of experts, including child psychologists, pediatricians, and Montessori specialists, specially designed six different types of games. These games are all included in the board game. The goal is to provide age-appropriate stimulation that supports children’s developmental stages.

“Research shows that traditional games are far more beneficial and educational for children compared to digital games or excessive gadget use,” said Dr. Mesty.
Focus and concentration are fundamental elements in a child’s cognitive development, particularly in early childhood. These skills are essential for effective learning, emotional regulation, and healthy social interaction as children grow and enter school age.
Unfortunately, a study cited by Tentang Anak found that three out of ten children in Indonesia show signs of attention disorders. This finding highlights a growing concern in early childhood development. Board games can serve as a simple yet effective tool to address this growing concern.
In addition to improving concentration, Dr. Mesty explained that board games can also enhance children’s mathematical abilities. She added that these games can gradually reduce symptoms of ADHD.
“It turns out that by playing board games, children become more attentive to the lessons or tasks in front of them,” she noted.
She also emphasized that many parents often misunderstand or misidentify ADHD. Not all hyperactive children are necessarily experiencing ADHD. One key symptom to watch for is when a child frequently abandons tasks before completing them.
“For example, a child starts drawing but leaves it after just one line. That kind of behavior might indicate an attention issue,” she added.
Another significant benefit of board games is their ability to reduce children’s dependency on gadgets and excessive screen time. Dr. Mesty advised parents to build healthy routines by incorporating board game sessions into their child’s daily schedule.
“Instead of letting children play with gadgets all day, parents can dedicate one hour a day for reading books or playing board games together as a family,” she suggested.
She also reminded parents to avoid exposing children under two years old to screens entirely. She advised them to limit screen time for children aged 2–5 to a maximum of one hour per day. For sensitive children, even one hour of screen time might be too much. This can lead to more frequent tantrums or an increased risk of speech delays.
