Study: Firstborns and Only Children at Higher Risk of Depression

Casal dels Infants – A recent study reveals that firstborns and only children are at a higher risk of experiencing anxiety and depression, even from an early age. Mental health symptoms can begin to appear as early as age 8. Pediatricians may detect these issues during routine check-ups.

Higher Risk of Anxiety and Depression

The study was conducted by Epic Research, a firm that manages the majority of electronic health records in the United States. Researchers analyzed data from over 182,000 children who underwent health screenings at the age of 8, when anxiety screenings typically begin.

Findings show that firstborns are 48% more likely to be diagnosed with anxiety and 35% more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to their younger siblings.

Only children, who have no siblings, are 42% more likely to develop anxiety. They also face a 38% higher risk of experiencing depression compared to children with siblings.

Birth Order’s Impact on Mental Health

These findings come amid growing concern over the mental health crisis affecting children and adolescents across the globe, including in the U.S. Birth order is not the only factor affecting a child’s mental health. However, the study suggests that social roles and family expectations can play a significant role in shaping psychological well-being.

“Anxiety and depression don’t stem from a single cause. So understanding contributing factors, such as birth order, can help parents and doctors better address each child’s specific needs,” said Caleb Cox, Head of Research and Data Science at Epic Research.

Every Child Can Be at Risk

Cox also emphasized that second-borns and youngest children are not immune to mental health challenges. It’s crucial for parents to recognize signs of anxiety or depression, regardless of a child’s position in the family.

He emphasized the need for emotional support, open communication, and early detection. These factors are crucial to help children grow up with strong mental and emotional well-being.
