Casal dels Infants – The phenomenon of children singing adult songs has recently become a hot topic among parents. Many parents have expressed concerns about the impact of adult songs, which are often melancholic and viral on social media, on their children’s development. These songs, frequently not suitable for their age or comprehension, contain lyrics with meanings that can be difficult for children to understand. Parents worry because they feel they cannot always control what their children hear or learn outside of their homes. This growing concern highlights the ongoing phenomenon of children singing adult songs.
Ilmi (37), a father of two from Bogor, West Java, shared his worries about the influence of adult songs on his children. Ilmi has a 5-year-9-month-old child and a 15-month-old child. He explained that although he can control the music they listen to at home, he finds it challenging to monitor what his children hear outside the house, especially at school and in their surrounding environment. “At home, it’s still possible to control the music. But outside the house, at school or in the surrounding environment, it’s hard to control. I’m really worried. It’s out of control,” said Ilmi.

Ilmi expressed growing concern as adult songs go viral and spread rapidly through social media. One example he mentioned was the popular song “Tembak Dor Dor Dor.” Ilmi worries that children who listen to this song may sing along to lyrics they don’t fully understand. He added that, even though parents can monitor music at home, children are still exposed to viral songs through their friends who also listen to and sing these songs. “Personally, I am more concerned about the lyrics. I’m afraid they might sing something they don’t fully understand,” Ilmi added.
Dimas (28), a father living in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, shares similar concerns. He has a child under the age of two who has already started to repeat lyrics from the song “APT” by Rose and Bruno Mars. Dimas worries that these adult lyrics may imprint on his child’s subconscious, potentially affecting the child’s development. “I am definitely worried. My concern is that my child doesn’t understand much yet because he is not even two years old. He might start repeating inappropriate things,” Dimas said.
Although Dimas understands that child education and supervision are the parents’ responsibility, he questions how to handle the situation if adult songs come from the child’s surrounding environment or friends. “This becomes a huge challenge for parents. What if our children are exposed to adult songs from the environment around them, which we can’t fully control?” he expressed.
The concerns raised by parents about exposing children to adult songs highlight an important issue. They emphasize the need for active parental involvement in monitoring the media their children consume. This supervision should not only occur at home but also extend to outside environments, including school and social circles. Parents need to be more discerning in choosing appropriate music for their children. They must ensure that their children are not exposed to content that is not suitable for their age or comprehension.
