Smarter Children Start with Fruits and Vegetables
Casal dels Infants – Having smarter children is the main hope of most parents, especially so they can achieve impressive academic success. To realize this goal, many parents choose to enroll their children in top-tier schools and various tutoring programs. However, providing children with knowledge from school or additional lessons alone is not enough to fully support their cognitive development.
A recent study by the University of Eastern Finland revealed that children’s intelligence is strongly linked to their daily diet. A regular intake of fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains has been proven to enhance brain function in children.

The study involved 161 elementary school students aged six to eight, from first to third grade. The researchers asked participants to record their daily food intake in a consumption journal and assessed their academic abilities using standardized tests.
The researchers focused on the Baltic Sea diet, which emphasizes high consumption of vegetables, fruits, fish, whole grains, and unsaturated fats, while limiting red meat, sugary products, and saturated fats.
As a result, children who consistently consumed healthy foods tended to be smarter children, as indicated by significantly better reading skills. This improvement was particularly noticeable among first to third-grade students.
According to researcher Eero Haapala, these results remained consistent even after accounting for other factors such as socioeconomic status, physical activity, body size, and overall fitness.
“These findings highlight the vital role of a healthy diet in supporting children’s cognitive development,” Haapala explained.
Haapala also emphasized that parents and schools play a major role in providing nutritious food for children. The government holds a key responsibility in ensuring the availability of healthy food options. The food industry also plays an important role in supporting their production.
With the right dietary choices, children have the potential to become smarter. They are also more likely to enjoy a better quality of life in the future.
